Emmanuel Cooper Prize

Patricia Shone, Winner of the Emmanuel Cooper Prize at Ceramic Art London 2019, works selected for the permanent collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum

The Emmanuel Cooper award is given by The Craft Pottery Charitable Trust which was set up in 1991 under Emmanuel Cooper’s Chairmanship of the CPA to support educational activities associated with ceramic activity across the UK..
For the last 5 years, the Trust has invited a museum with a notable collection of contemporary ceramics to select a piece of work at Ceramic Art London which they would like to acquire for their permanent collection. The Trust buys the work from the potter using a bequest from the estate of the late Emmanuel Cooper and donates it to the museum.
This year the Victoria & Albert Museum was invited to make the choice.
The V&A is such an important place of history and reference. I am still coming to terms with the fact of having my work there. It is humbling and a huge honour to be a small part of the ancient story thread of humanity that is pottery.

York Ceramics Fair 2019

I’m looking forward to being part of this relatively new show on the pottery circuit. The Craft Potters Association and the Centre of Ceramic Art at York Art Gallery are joining together to present the York Ceramics Fair and the CoCA Day of Clay with events, workshops, talks, demonstrations and selling exhibitions.

It’s perfect timing for early Christmas planners but happily free from too much tinsel. Brown and crusty pots in abundance! And some porcelain too.

“This exhibition (11-20 October) represents the coming together of three artists, spanning the Highlands and Islands, who share a common interest in elemental material and process. Through their work, each individually draws from the northern landscape and references their own notion of community and place.”

Shaun Fraser @shaun_fraser  Patricia Shone @patriciashoneceramics  Vivian Ross-Smith @vrosssmith

This has been a great chance for me to revisit some time based clay installation ideas from over the years. The effect of water on dry clay can be quite dramatic. These works gives a chance to see how structures disintegrate and change over time, water being the agent of that change. Also included are experiments with porcelain and newsprint creating pieces as fragile as memories.

CIRCUS is a collective of practising, professional artists and producers committed to making contemporary art accessible to a broader Highland audience as well as supporting recent art graduates from our area. We are all based in Inverness and work across many different disciplines including painting, printmaking, sculpture, film and performance.

The Art of Gathering – the New Craftsman Gallery, St Ives

The exhibition, The Art of Gathering, will bring together artists and makers who use ‘gathering’ as an integral part of their practice.

àite cruinneachaidh – gathering place (Scots Gaelic)

Gathering is such an evocative notion, especially here in the Highlands. Gathering together often meant walking many miles on narrow tracks. My journey has been more of a gathering of myself and what is important to me, and ultimately finding my place in the world. Working with clay, knowing the processes and history of the material and its domestic uses always brings me back to how it connects human beings, how it gathers us together in a common humanity.

The show also includes a local painter from Newlyn, Michael Porter showing his exquiste ‘Dirt Series’, the studio collective Forest and Found – naturally dyed applique textiles by Abigail Booth and wood vessels by Max Bainbridge (they have been selected this year for the Jerwood Makers prize ), silversmith Stuart Cairns and the Irish basketmaker Joe Hogan (finalist in the Loewe Foundation Craft prize 2018).

It is the home of the Stone of Destiny, the crowning site of former Scottish kings and also houses the famous portrait of Dido Belle by David Martin.
