Saggar fired Riven Jar  tenmoku glaze wood fired

The textured surface is left unglazed and takes on colour and markings during its firing in a charcoal filled saggar box within the wood kiln (also known as tanka firing). The interior glaze has developed fine crystals within its surface as the iron oxide has changed form during the firing. The lack of oxygen within the saggars causes this to happen. Sometimes, over time and with use, metallic iron on the glaze surface will re-oxidise and tiny bright rust spots appear. These are perfectly safe and can be wiped away with a cloth, or appreciated as a sign of continuation of change in the piece.
