Most of my textured work is unglazed. The feel of the clay in the hand being paramount. Occasionally I will use glaze and particularly luscious green Oribe. It adds even more depth and interest to the Erosion textures, it refracts blue light where it pools deeply in crevasses. The lid, which was raised on wadding has caught the fly ash and has crystallised more than the main jar which itself was fired on 3 sea shells.
I am very fond of making lidded jars, there is something compelling in lifting a lid to reveal the contents. I have a habit of making the opening quite small so that you have to hold the piece, lift and turn it to catch the light across the interior. That way you also get to feel the textures.
Oribe is the name given to a particular type of Japanese pottery, named after Furuta Oribe, an artistically important historical figure in Japan who was born in 1543. The name is most commonly used for this particular green glaze.
